LOVE. DOGS SHOW DOGS

The first dog show was held in 1859 in Newcastle-upon-Tune, England as a way to judge whether breeding stock were a within the breed standard and also so breeders could showcase their up-and-coming dogs. Since then kennel clubs throughout the world have sprouted up and in some cultures it is almost as a religion. In the 150 years that has passed since the first show, the principle reason for showing a dog has not changed although it is hard to believe when you see the fuss and mucking about in the grooming building!

What we call a dog show is actually a confirmation show – a show to judge how well a dog conforms to the breed standard: a written description of the ideal in each breed including not only build and overall looks but also temperament, gait and unique characteristics.

THE BASICS

First things first: The official term for dog shows is conformation — as in, the act of conforming or producing conformity.

GROOMING

Show judges will judge not only based on your dog’s skills but on how well your dog shows and is cared for.

ATTEND A SHOW

Go to a show and familiarize yourself with what happens in the show ring, and to experience the energy and camaraderie between the spectators and exhibitors.

PREP YOUR DOG

A conformation class will prepare you and your dog for your first experience – and for your best chances at winning.

TRY A MATCH SHOW

Wish you could have a practice run before going into a real show? That’s what Match Shows are for.

FIND A MENTOR

An experienced teacher who can show you the ropes is pro bably the most valuable resource any greenhorn can have.

LOVE YOUR DOGS

Remember your priorities. Once you become immersed in the dog world, it’s easy to become hyper-focused on the competition. Always remember: The best dog at a dog show — or whatever event you’re competing in — is the one that goes home with you at the end of the day.
